US diesel prices top $6 per gallon for first time
The national average price for diesel in the United States exceeded $6 per gallon for the first time on Thursday, according to GasBuddy, as ongoing conflicts have tightened supply.
Oil futures climbed above $100 per barrel Thursday amid the continuing U.S.-Iran war and Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries. Brent crude settled at $107.63 per barrel while West Texas Intermediate futures settled at $102.48 per barrel, marking the highest levels since mid-May.
"Every truck, every delivery, every package, every grocery run just got more expensive," said Patrick De Haan, analyst at GasBuddy, on social media platform X.
De Haan added that the record diesel prices would affect all cargo, shipments and deliveries across the country and could push inflation higher throughout the supply chain. Diesel prices have risen approximately $2.30 compared to one year ago, based on GasBuddy data.
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported diesel inventories stand at 106.3 million barrels, which is 13% below the five-year average.
